About the Belgian Polymer Group :

History:

For a long time the National Science Foundation of Belgium has supported a Belgian Polymer Research Contact Group. However,as a result of political decisions,this group ceased in 1994.

There was a general feeling among the members of the old Polymer Research Contact Group to maintain and even intensify the contacts between the belgian research groups involved in polymer science and industry.

For that reason it was decided to explore the feasibility of founding a Belgian Polymer Group [BPG] that would serve as a forum for discussions among scientists from universities and industry involved in polymer science.

The objectives and structure of the Belgian Polymer Group are the following:

Main objectives:

a) to promote regular contacts between all research groups from industry,universities and high-education institutes active in the field of polymers in Belgium.

b) to provide a forum for the exchange of informations on the newest trends in polymer science and technology.

c) to stimulate fundamental research activities and co-operations between industry and university.

d) to keep record of all current directions of polymer research (running projects) being pursued at the different universities and industrial R&D-laboratories in Belgium and to stimulate the initiation of new joint research projects.

e) to give junior scientists (graduate students,Ph.D.īs) opportunities to establish contacts with other universities and with the industry to build up experience in the presentation of their works.

f) to contribute to post graduate education in polymer science.

g) to present the Belgian polymer reseachers on international level (e.g. in the European Polymer Federation).

h) to cooperate with other international polymer groups in the organisation of joint activities.

Main activities:

a) Organisation of a 2-day meeting on a general topic with oral contributions from junior scientists once a year.

b) Organisation of a 1-day meeting on a well-focussed topic,aimed at industrial as well as academic participants.This could be new characterisation techniques,new classes of polymers or new trends in processing of polymers.

c) Editing of a data base on persons,research activities,expertise and techniques in the various academic and industrial research groups in Belgium.This information only for the members of the BPG will be made on discs and will be updated when needed.

d) Organisation of council meetings to discuss issues of major importance to polymer scientists in industry and university.

e) Representation of the Belgian Polymer Group in the European Polymer Federation and other international organizations.

The organization of the Belgian Polymer Group is the following:

- Nonprofit organization with a legal status

Board:

* President: Prof.Eric Geothals,University of Gent

* Vice-Chairman: Prof.Robert Jerome,University of Liege

* Secretary:Prof.Jacques Devaux,University of Louvain la Neuve

* Treasuer:Prof.Hugo Bergmans,University of Leuven

* Further members of the board:

Dr.Guenter Beyer,Kabelwerk Eupen AG,Eupen
Dr.Yvan Bogart,3M, Antwerpen
Dr.J.Kersten,Baxter R&D,Bruxelles
Prof.Etienne Schacht,University of Gent

-The president and the secretary are elected for 2 years and are from different language communities .

-The elected presidents should be alternating from the French,Flemish or German speaking community.

-2 elected board members are from the industry and 2 elected members are from universities;they are elected for 2 years.The treasuer is elected for a longer period.

Council:

-Representation of all contributing research groups from university and industry.The board is elected by the members of the council.

-International members are also welcome...

-to have a balanced representation at the board level of members from industry and university and from different regions of Belgium.

The financing of the Belgian Polymer Group is the following:

Payment for an annual membership is:

-5.000 Bfr for polymer research groups from universities

-25.000 Bfr for industrial members (corporate membership). Each group or company can delegate 1 person as a full member of the council.

There are several Meetings and Seminars orgainized by the Belgian Polymer Group.

The next workshop of the Belgian Polymer Group will be at 06.December 1996 in Eupen / East-Belgium

Theme: Reactive Processing - Polymerisation,Chemical Modification and Compatibilisation using Extrusion

Location: Hotel Bosten Ambassador,B-4700 Eupen,Haasstrasse 81,Tel.: 087-470800

Dear Scientist,
You are kindley invited to the next workshop of the BPG which will be a one day meeting in Eupen on reactive processing in the fields of polymers.
Extruders are widely used for the synthesis of new polymers,for chemical modification of existing polymers and for the compatibilisation
of polymer blends with improved properties.

The morning session has a tutorial oriented character and will be given by:

Mr.Liebhold / BERSTORFF: Twin screw extruders for reactive processes
Prof.Janssen / University Groningen-Nl: Reactive extrusion for solvent free processing - Facts and Phantasies

After lunch there are several lectures from industrial and university research groups.

The contribution to this one day meeting (registration,coffee and lunch included) will be:
for non BPG members : 3500 BEF
for BPG members : 1500 BEF
for students as associate members : 1000 BEF
